Johnny Mitchell - Acquired by Ron on 10/12/99
Who is this person:
Johnny Mitchell was a Pro-Bowl tight end with the New YOrk Jets. Unlike many players, he saved his pennies and got out while his knees still worked. He is now engaged to a former Miss Universe from Brazil.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
He was working with my friend, Chip McNeer, already cited on this page as a major sports figure (Ohio schoolboy Basketball legend)

Chip scored the autograph while doing a mortgage loan for Johnny.
What did you get?
An autographed Score Football card from when Johnny was on the jets.

Anthony Carter - Acquired by Ron on 10/8/99
Who is this person:
Former University Of Michigan, Michigan Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins star wide receiver.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
A.C. was one of my childhood heroes. He was the first wide receiver from the University of Michigan to emerge into national prominence, and went on to become one of the most exciting players in the NFL.
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
I was at a charity golf tournament courtesy of Bert Wantland, a business associate. He and Steve Covert (whose son Allen is in every Sandler movie because they are rooommates) introducted me to AC.
What did you get?
I got AC to autograph the back of one of the raffle tickets they were selling at the event. In a further development, I won three prizes in the rafle, including the basket of cheer, a gift certificate and golf for two at the PGA National Championship course. I was amazed, I never win these things, so combined with the AC autograph, it was a huge night.

The Highlander - Acquired by Steve on 9/26/99
Who is this person:
The Highlander is a professional wrestler. He hasn't quite cracked the big time yet, but at 6'10" and over 600 pounds, it's only a matter of time. For now, he wrestles in a few lesser leagues and also enters a lot of toughman contests.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
When he's huge, we'll have been in on the ground floor
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
The Highlander is actually a friend of mine. He worked at the Michigan Renaissance Festival prior to embarking on his wrestling career. He was out this year performing as the tie-breaker in the Press-A-Wench contest. His real name is John (last name withheld).
What did you get?
An autographed picture of The Highlander holding up a very large double-bladed axe inscribed "To Winter Camp, Best Wishes". He also drew the axe below his signature.

Chad G - Acquired by Steve on 9/15/99
Who is this person:
As a strong man competitor, I knew there'd be some interest.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
I knew that several campers were fans of the WSM, and had been mocked for not getting his autograph the previous year.
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
The WSM came to the Michigan Renaissance again this year. I knew I had little chance to get there to get an autograph, so I asked Lady Isade (Maria Christian), who was one of the emcees for the event, to get them for me. She came threw with flying colors. When I couldn't make out some of the names, Sheriff Robin Lockwood (Gary Burton), the other emcee, came through with the real names.
What did you get?

Gump Worsley - Acquired by Steve on 6/6/99
Who is this person:
Gump was the last goalie to play in the NHL without a mask. He played for the Montreal Canadians and then finished out his career with the Minnesota North Stars.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
I didn't (see below)
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
No assist here, my mom did all the work.
Gump grew up in the same neighborhood as my father. He was a few years older than my dad, so they weren't best friends or anything, but they apparently had some mutual friends. My mom thought it would be a neat thing to take my dad to get Gump's autograph as part of his birthday celebration (my dad was born 6/6/36).
Anyhow, they stood in a fairly long line and eventually made their way to the reviewing stand.
My mom asked Gump "Do you know who this is standing next to me."
Gump took a long look and said "Oh my god, is it Gerry?". From that moment on, the autograph was pretty mucha done deal.
What did you get?
An inscribed picture of Gump blocking a shot in his Canadians uniform. It's inscribed "Good Luck to Winter Camp; Best Wishes; Gump Worsley

Bo Schembechler - Acquired by Steve on 12/22/98
Who is this person:
Long-time coach of the U of M Wolverines and less successful Tigers manager
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
U of M connection is obvious.
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
Mark Hunt has to get an obvious assist. He stood in the signing line while I stood in the buying line, then went shopping while I waited for the ened of the line. This signing was at Border's in Dearborn, but was pretty similar to the one at Waldenbook's. The crowd wasn't nearly as rowdy though and most of them were older. Booksignings apparently always have nazis though and this one was insistent that Bo would never get through the line if he signed my notecard. There were 10 people behind me and Bo had 40 minutes left, but the nazi could not be dissuaded from his original statement. For what it's worth, he seemed like a really nice guy, but I guess that's why they have the nazi there.
What did you get?
I wound up with a copy of "Michigan Memories" with Bo's name scrawled on the frontispiece.

Lee Elder - Acquired by Ron on 11/13/98
Who is this person:
Lee Elder is an African American golfer who (along with one other) broke the color barrier in professional golf. He won numerous PGA tournaments and at least one major.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
His courage in the face of the overt racism of all-white country club golf. He is currently helping Tiger Woods with his golf game and in developing his public persona.
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
Jeanne Takeda, my wife, volunteered to work at a golf tournament designed to raise scholarship money for Northwood University, where she works. Lee Elder was one of the guests of honor. Jeanne reports that he was a very nice man, willing to take pictures with anyone who asked. He also signed numerous golf colectibles for local charities. A true class act.
What did you get?
Jeanne got Mr. Elder to sign a placard announcing the event. He simply signed his name.

John "Spider" Salley - Acquired by Ron on 11/2/98
Who is this person:
John is an athlete, entertainer and comedian. He was a power forward on the legendary Detroit Piston Championship Teams, "the Bad Boys". He also recently hosted a game show on the Fox Family Network. He is currently pursuing other film and television projects.
Why did you think this would be cool for Winter Camp?
The connection to Detroit was obvious, as is the tie between the Bad Boys of Basketball and the Bad Boys of Mahican Chapter. Dude, he's like famous. Also, I had an inside connection.
Any interesting details or stories behind the quest:
All credits and props go to Chip McNeer, Ohio Schoolboy basketball legend and my neighbor. He set up the whole deal, including me letting John know exactly what to write on the picture. I recant my earlier doubts about his performance.
What did you get?
A picture of John in his Miami Heat uniform going in for a layup against the Washington Bullets. It is signed, "Yo, Good luck to the Bad Boys of Winter Camp from John "Spider" Salley" All in all, apretty cool deal.
