Hike Volley Ball

Submitted by: Ethan on Saturday, 13-Nov-2004 23:13:21 EST

Difficulty: Moderate
Location: Outdoor
Timeframe: Day
Work as: Teams
Equipment Needs: Light
Basics of the activity
We had an idea to carry around two scout staves with a volley ball new strung between them and start playing volley ball at random intervals. I think this could be applied to a hike, and there could be someone with a whistle and when blown, volley must be played by the particiapants. Two guys would have to hold up the net and the rest of the hikers would be split between two teams. The trick would be to force the teams to come up with a way to hike together in some way that volley ball could be played at any time.
Potential Variations
It could eb played with a moving net, or two balls, or at night, or as a part of cross country golf, or any other thing.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Submitted by: Steve D. on Sunday, 09-Nov-2003 02:02:06 EST
Skills required: Mental
Difficulty: Moderate
Location: Outdoor
Timeframe: Night
Work as: Teams
Equipment Needs: Light
Basics of the activity
A variation on Predator/Prey. Most of the players are students who, if they accumulate enough "ick factor" (aka rocks) can become Scoobies. A handful are vampires. One is The Slayer.
The Slayer can kill a vampire by touching it. A vampire can kill prey by touching it. If a vampire chooses to take its prey back to the vamp base (graveyard), it can become a vampire (predator).
The goal is for the students to survive to the end of time. The vamps just want to kill everyone. Ick factor would be created via rocks and a few magic artifacts.
Potential Variations
A more complex version where someone is the "watcher" and/or someone is the "master vampire" and both sides would like "ick factor" could also be developed. If a lot of people were interested it might be wrothwhile, but if there are few Buffy fans (sacrilege!) then the easy version would be better.

Our standard activity as viewed through a variety of TV "Filters":
MTV: Teams are selected to maximize conflict among the teams(ala Real World). To ensure problems, some background information on the mystery is given to players in secret and may be contradictory.
ABC (The Mole): Each team has one player whose goal is to not solve the mystery or to solve it incorrectly.
PAX: Murder with a Christian/Religious theme.
CBS (CSI): Murder scenes are set up with clues that must be discovered and rely on insane jeopardy grade knowledge of obscura.
MTV Gauntlet, CBS Survivor: At each station you must eliminate a suspect or a team member. Possibly multiple suspects with the team eliminating the fewest having to eliminate a player of the team with the most eliminations choice.

Basics of the activity
This one calls for some precamp activity. The basic idea is that famous Winter Campers or famous Winter Camp homes would be presented with a tour guide explaining some of the features and history of the house. Could include homes of campers who don't reside locally or famous locations like Osvath Hall or Stately Rein Manor.
Potential Variations
An alternate plan - each Winter Camper brings a picture of one room in his house where he is primarily responsible for decor and/or the principle user of the room and the rest of us try to associate campers and rooms.

This could appear on GAS or as part of a Game Show Network show or even Spike TV. The idea is simple - 6' bowling pins that you hurl yourself at on a sled or wagon. A foul line establishes where you can't touch the ground anymore and you'd be required to have your hands on straps or something to prevent arms wide bowling.
Potential Variations
Put it on TVLAND and everyone has to bowl Grease style (complete with Tbirds and whatnot). Put it on STYLE and it's rock and bowl with pin count and attire points. Put it on UNI and keep score in Spanish.

Basics of the activity
In the MTv version, we borrow from Rock & Jock sports and have slight looser rules for the jocks (for instance, they can take 4 steps with the frisbee not 3) to simulate their superior athletic skills.
There would, of course, be special scoring areas marked by circles stood in by either the thrower or receiver.
Potential Variations
TechTV version. Rip off their Game review shows for high tech ultimate. Played at night with an electric frisbee and special play zones marked on the ground that provide "powerups" to those catching in them. Powerups would mostly grant rule changes (probably temporarily, but could also include teleporters, respawners and all manner of First Person Shooter toys. Maybe even "Multi-ball" Porbably the powerup would be random. There might also be "targets" which if struck and the frisbee caught would grant abilities or points.

Object is to stack milk crates to gain altitude. Ideally there are two stacks and the player stands on one and adds to the other, then repeats. Team mates can hand him new crates but are not allowed to help with the stacking. They are allowed to hold the stack steady (to avoid silly accidents). The winner is the team who gets a member standing on the highest stack of crates.

Back in the day, we used to refer to things as being "of song and story". I think it was from some cheesy fantasy novel. Anyhow, in preparing the museum entries, it quickly became clear that there were some items (like Jeff's broken hammer) whose original story had been lost.
This contest then is to write, tell, sing, or recite a reasonable (ie, believable) explanation for that item's presence in the museum and then the group will vote on the stories and the winner will be the official legend of that item (hey, history is written by the winners, baby).
Key to this contest is that once its over, there is only one true story of that item that any of us ever tell and which is recorded in various historical documents. Archaelogists, anthropologists and even physicists do it all the time, why not us?
Potential Variations
We could do the whole thing on the web.
