After the Apocalypse
Chapter 91: The Spying Game

by Mark Bollman--> and Steve Donohue

"It's pretty simple Miller, I think even you can handle it," said Sumner, a half-smile curled across his lips.

Miller nodded. He didn't much like the way the other men made fun of him, but at least Sumner treated him with respect most of the time. Sumner's sarcasm was wasted on most of the militia men, but Miller usually got it. Besides, the old man had taken him under his wing and it had really helped him out. Sumner was probably the only reason he was still in the militia.

"You're a reservist, you were on duty at Selfridge the week after Christmas. You weren't happy about it, but you were about to be drummed out because you hadn't gotten in your two weeks yet. You've been working a lot of overtime because your wife is pregnant. You're on your way home now, hoping to find her."

"Check. Where's home?"

"That's a good question. These guys are probably from the Detroit area, so we'll need somewhere else... Flint will probably work."

"Isn't that too close"

"Not really. Besides, these guys seem to know what's up. They aren't likely to let you go to Flint - it will be a clear target. Your wife Penny isn't likely to have survived."

"Okay. That makes sense. How much do I know about what's going on."

"Probably as much as you do. Don't mention anything about us or them, but you certainly know the Russians hit us and we hit back. Mention that there was some rumor of additional attacks, it might keep them off the radio."

"Wouldn't Selfridge be a target too?"

"Probably. How about your wife called because she was going into labor and your CO took pity on you?"

"Sounds good. What are my objectives?"

"Find out as much as you can about their intentions. My guess is they aren't going to leave that camp any time soon, but I could be wrong. Find out about their numbers, defenses, supplies, pretty much anything you can."

"How long should I stay in?"

"Not more than a week I'd say. Make sure to talk about your wife a lot. Give them the impression you really miss her and you're going to go after her whether they approve or not."

"Okay, I think I got it."

"And when you're out, report directly to me, no one else. I want to be sure we don't go off half-cocked and kill a bunch of boy scouts just because Jameson and Zaluski couldn't cut it as tenderfeet."

"Yes sir. Anything else?"

"Yep. Be careful. These guys seem to be pretty smart - that propane tank was pretty clever. Don't share too much - the less they know, the less they'll guess."
